In the middle reaches of the Krka, the banks of the river have been extensively reforested in the area of the national park. Between Roški slap and Skradinski buk, in the middle of the lake of the same name, lies the island of Visovac, which is one of the most important natural and cultural treasures of the Republic of Croatia. The Franciscan monastery of Our Lady of Mercy and the Church of Our Lady of Visovac have been located there since 1445. The monastery forms an environmental unit with the landscape of the Visovac lakes. Throughout Visovac's turbulent history, it has remained an island of peace and prayer. The Franciscan monastery has an important archaeological collection, a collection of historical vestments and a rich library of old manuscripts, books and incunabula, including a 15th-century edition of Aesop's Fables. Visovac is also called Our Lady's Island because of the centuries-long veneration of Our Lady. The national park also contains a 16th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery (1577) called Krka, built on the foundations of a former Roman Catholic monastery.
