The fort that belongs to the cannon has had a turbulent history.

William of Orange had Fort de Schans constructed in 1574 to protect Texel and the important Texel roadstead against the Spanish. In the Golden Age, Texel was a crucial point for shipping, with hundreds of VOC merchant ships anchored in the roadstead. Napoleon Bonaparte enlarged the fort in 1811 and built two supporting forts, Redoute and Lunette.

After the French period, however, the fort began to decline, and in the 1930s even half of the fort was excavated for dike reinforcement.
