The Oignies ice cream parlors were founded in 1839 by François Houtart-Cossée in the buildings of the former abbey. First ice cream parlors in Belgium, and innovative in the glass technique, they flourished and occupied up to a thousand people. Revolutionary also in the social attention paid to workers, they were taken over by the 'Glaceries Saint-Roch' in 1927. All industrial activity ceased in 1956.
