    Hiking

The lake is beautiful, a mirror that perfectly reflects the Monte Matto in the background. The climb from the Valasco plateau is a bit steep, and not always well signposted, but it's worth it!

    Hiking

On the French side you could pass either from the Fremamorta pass or from the Bassa del Drous and then descend to the Valasco plain and go up again to the Valcuca lake ... it is absolutely forbidden to bring animals even on a leash because it is a protected area!

Hi, can anyone confirm if it is possible to go up to Lake Valcuca from the French side? Val de tinee'.
Maps shows me the route, but I have never found confirmation on the path.

If you're looking for a challenging hike with stunning alpine views, the Lago di Valcuca trail is a rewarding choice. This difficult route takes you through the wild beauty of the Valle Gesso, where you'll traverse picturesque larch forests and grassy slopes. The highlight is reaching Lago di Valcuca itself, a tranquil lake nestled in a solitary glacial basin, often reflecting the majestic Monte Matto. The entire journey covers 6.6 miles (10.6 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 2597 feet (792 metres), typically requiring about 4 hours and 47 minutes to complete.

Before you set out, be aware that this is a difficult trail demanding good physical fitness and sure-footedness. You should wear sturdy hiking shoes and plan your visit for good weather, as parts of the path can be poorly marked and exposed, making snow or fog particularly hazardous. Also, remember that dogs are not permitted on this trail, even on a leash, because it lies within a protected natural park.

The Lago di Valcuca trail offers a true jewel for nature lovers, providing an unspoiled atmosphere far from the crowds. Its solitary glacial basin and the clear waters of the lake, often mirroring Monte Matto, make it a unique destination in the Valle Gesso. This route is ideal if you seek a profound connection with the alpine environment and appreciate the quiet solitude of a pristine natural setting.

Embark on the challenging Lago Valcuca e Lago Sottano di Fremamorta loop, a demanding hike through Valle Gesso's wild alpine landscape. This route covers 13.1 miles (21.0 km) with a significant elevation gain of 4916 feet (1498 metres), requiring about 9 hours and 34 minutes to complete. You will navigate stony paths and numerous switchbacks, passing through a centuries-old larch wood and enjoying continuous views of the Argentera mountain range, including Monte Matto reflected in Lake Valcuca. The four Fremamorta lakes, with their incredible blue hues, are a highlight of this difficult trail.

This hard-rated route demands very good fitness, sure-footedness, and alpine experience, so come prepared with sturdy shoes. The trail features significant elevation changes, particularly steep climbs from the Valasco plateau. While parts follow an old military mule track, some sections may not be well-signposted, so careful navigation is advised. Remember that this is a protected area, and bringing animals, even on a leash, is forbidden.

The loop offers spectacular panoramic views as a reward for your strenuous ascent, providing continuous vistas of the Vallone della Valletta and surrounding peaks like Corno Stella. Along the way, you can explore the ruins of the large Umberto I Barracks, built in 1894, adding a historical dimension to the natural beauty. Consider a recommended detour to the Bivacco Guiglia for additional expansive views of the region.
