The rock grotto was built in 1937 by the three brothers Josef, Peter and Aolys Gerharz and by Peter Thome. At that time they noticed this small rock face while moving wood together and the idea arose to let a small altar stone with a Mother of God into the rock. In the same year, the Sebastianus altar in the Nachtsheim church was replaced by the neo-Gothic sacrament altar ("Johannesaltar") that is there today. Michael Fassbender, who works as a voluntary church worker, initially stored the Sebastianus altar that was no longer needed, but was happy to make the stored tabernacle stone available for this purpose. The figure of Mary was donated by Peter Thome. Since the creation of the rock grotto, it has already been renovated three times. After the first repair work was carried out in 1948, further repair work followed in 2002, but this time on a larger scale. Over the decades, the altar stone was completely weathered and the Marian figure also showed some serious damage, which has been repaired. During this renovation, a staircase and a seating area were also created. The most recent restoration took place in 2017. Once again, the damage to the altar stone was carefully repaired.
