The signage also features a QR code for more information. However, we only used the QR code here and found out that the outrage of the villagers was directed against the convicted women (not against the sentences or against the execution). The gallows were also burned when the witches were burned - but compensation was to be paid for this.

      Witch burnings in Nachtsheim
From the 15th to the 18th century, many people were burned at the stake as supposed witches and sorcerers. The reasons for this witch craze are manifold. The assumption that witches had entered into a covenant with the devil and that their magic powers would harm people and church often led to these atrocities.
Supposed witches and wizards were held responsible for human illnesses or misfortunes in the house and stable. The cattle could allegedly become seriously ill if they had passed the "magician's" apartment the day before.
In this region, too, innocent people were accused of witchcraft, persecuted and killed. In 1593 some women from Nachtsheim and Boos were suspected of witchcraft and imprisoned in Mayen. There they were tortured until they confessed to being a witch and to having practiced nefarious spells. Her execution was scheduled for August 31, 1594: the two communities had to pick her up in Mayen with their wagons. Riflemen escorted the train. The excitement and outrage of the population must have been enormous. According to tradition, while the flames were still raging, some men suddenly grabbed an axe, knocked over the freshly erected gallows, chopped them up and threw the pieces into the fire.
