It belongs to the parish office Weißenfels-Südost in the parish of Merseburg of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany. The namesake of the church is Saint Mary. The church was built as a Romanesque choir tower church. The church was rebuilt during the baroque period. The church tower was raised by an octagonal tower. The nave, built between 1713 and 1716, extends almost to the roof dome.
