Druce Lake

Druce Lake is primarily a private lake, with access generally reserved for residents of the surrounding community and their invited guests. Public access for activities like swimming, boating, or fishing is not available directly on Druce Lake. However, the nearby Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve offers extensive public trails and natural areas for hiking, biking, and bird-watching.

For residents and their guests, Druce Lake offers a variety of recreational opportunities. These include swimming, electric motor boating, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, and excellent fishing. Ice fishing is also popular during the winter months. A sandy beach on Mainsail Drive is exclusively for residents' use.

Direct public hiking trails around the immediate shoreline of Druce Lake are not available due to its private nature. However, the expansive Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve, located just west of Druce Lake, provides over 5.5 miles of multi-use trails that are open to the public for hiking, biking, running, and skiing. This preserve offers a fantastic natural escape with diverse wetlands and wildlife.

While Druce Lake itself doesn't have public hiking trails, the nearby Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve offers generally flat and accessible terrain. For families without direct lake access, the nearby Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve is an excellent option for family outings, featuring easy trails suitable for children and opportunities for bird-watching. Additionally, Six Flags Great America amusement park is just a few miles away.

Dogs are generally welcome on leash at the Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve, which is the primary public trail system near Druce Lake. It's always a good idea to check the specific dog policies of the Lake County Forest Preserves for any updates or designated off-leash areas, but typically, leashed dogs are permitted on the multi-use trails.

Druce Lake is a glacial lake known for its clear water and healthy plant community, including lily pads in shallow areas. A significant 'sandbar' shoal is present in its northwest section. Originally known as Second Lake, Druce Lake was named after Alexander Druse, an early settler from the 1840s. The area evolved into a rural resort destination in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with hotels offering activities like boating and fishing. While it transitioned to year-round homes, remnants of its past, like the 1958 dam separating it from Third Lake, are still visible, adding to its unique character.
