Matthias Petersen (born December 24, 1632 in Oldsum; † September 16, 1706; also Matz Peters) was a North Frisian captain and whaler from Oldsum on the North Frisian island of Föhr. Also known as "Happy Matthias", "Matthias the Happy" or "Mathis the Happy", Matthias Petersen achieved fame by hunted 373 whales within five decades and achieved great prosperity, which is why he, like his stone grave slab the cemetery of the church of St. Laurentii in Süderende on Föhr, "with the consent of all, assumed the name 'The Happy'".
