The large cemetery is surrounded by a fieldstone dike, interrupted at several points to the south and west by ancient structures.

Beyond the smaller openings to the south and north, there are three brick portals that provide access to the church and the cemetery.

The church consists of a Romanesque apse, chancel, and nave, a late Gothic tower, and a sacristy, as well as a Renaissance armory on the north side of the church (now used as a chapel).

The church, built partly of tuff and partly of brick, is whitewashed, except for the tower, which is made of red brick. All roofs of the church are covered with lead.

St. Nicholas Church in Ballum is a beautifully preserved Romanesque building, consisting of a nave, choir, and apse, as well as a Gothic tower featuring the Törninglehn spire typical of Northwest Schleswig. Notable features include Romanesque lime paintings of the apostles in the apse, a richly sculpted pulpit (1600), and a Romanesque baptismal font, also decorated with reliefs. The church still has a lead roof and is largely made of Rhenish tuff. Furthermore, there are numerous noteworthy farmhouses and cottages in the municipality, particularly in the still relatively intact church village.
