The sheep oak is a pedunculate oak and has been registered as a natural monument with the lower nature conservation authority of the district of Gießen since 1953. It is approx. 400 years old, has a height of approx. 20 m and a circumference of approx. 555 cm.
The four noble courts of the Bensburg were also located in this place. This group courtyard settlement was easily accessible to traffic thanks to the old routes and was in a protected location. The four courtyards are also called the “freyen Dünsberger Höfe” in a document from 1372, so they were tax-free. It can be assumed that the cradle of Marquart I, the first Count of Königsberg, was in this courtyard on the sheep oak. More in the video:
