      Who was Georg Sennert?

The Grefrather was chairman of the landscape advisory board of the district of Viersen. He has been a member of the committee since 1975 - initially as a deputy member, from 1989 as a full member and since January 26, 1993 as chairman.

Sennert, born on November 19, 1952 in Süchteln, has been campaigning for the protection of nature since school days. Above all, he mapped the bird world on the Lower Rhine and beyond. His notes were incorporated into the landscape plans of the Viersen district. The conservationist has made a name for himself with the projects Brachter Depot, Elmpter Schwalmbruch and Krickenbecker Seen.

In 1988 Sennert founded the Krickenbecker Lakes Biological Station with other volunteers. Since then he has always been a member of the board of the sponsoring association - until 2006 as chairman, then as nature conservation officer and honorary chairman. In 2007 Winfried Schittges, Vice-Chairman of the Rhineland Landscape Assembly, awarded Georg Sennert the Rhineland Thaler for his services to nature conservation.

The central square in the middle of the former ammunition depot of the British Army of the Rhine in the Brachter Forest is called "Georg-Sennert-Platz". To honor Georg Sennert's many years of commitment to nature with this gesture," said District Administrator Dr. Andreas Coenen, "and there is probably no better place for it than this, for which he put so much heart and soul."
