The park of the former royal stables is also known as the Garden of Porta Romana. It is located in the Oltrarno, behind the Quartiere della Pace, and is a continuation of the Boboli Gardens. The two parks are separated by the old city walls. The garden of the former royal stables covers an area of approximately six hectares and was designed by Giuseppe Poggi, who laid it out in the English style. The buildings were built during the time when Florence was the capital of the Kingdom of Italy to house the king's horses and carriages.Later, when Rome became the capital of Italy, the building and garden lay abandoned for a long time, losing their primary function. In 1919, the complex was acquired and donated to the Royal Institute of Art.After several years of neglect, it is now a municipal public park with a children's playground, while the buildings are used as classrooms and workshops for the State Art Institute.
