In the 16th century, and due to population growth, the Daimiel authorities asked Emperor Carlos I for a license to build another parish church. The monarch agreed and the church was finished in 1587.

The church has a Latin cross floor plan, of the Doric order, brick vaults, stone arches and pottery tiled floors (today covered by a wooden platform).

The original altarpiece was golden, in the Churrigueresque style, and was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War.
