This monastery complex—one of the famous rock monasteries in this region, which, due to its special significance, has even earned the title of World Heritage Site—does not have as its patron saint one of the many people we venerate as saints, nor the Mother of God. Instead, it is dedicated to a biblically attested event in the life of Jesus, namely his METAMORPHOSIS (in German, "Transfiguration of Christ" or "Transfiguration of the Lord").
All the evangelists except John report this: Mark (chapter 9), Luke (chapter 9), and Matthew (chapter 17). In a study guide from the German Bible Society, the event of the Transfiguration is succinctly summarized in the following two sentences:
=> "In the midst of everyday life, three disciples have an Easter experience with Jesus: They see Jesus in a mysterious light, and Moses and Elijah converse with him. Thus, the disciples' deepest identity as the 'beloved Son' of God is revealed."
This event, attested three times in the New Testament, is located on Mount Tabor in Israel. A basilica was built there to commemorate it (see komoot.com/de-de/highlight/266239 ), which can thus be considered the original church for the patronage of this monastery.
