In 1567, the tower was repaired by the mason Pedro de la Chica. The tower got its name from its reddish color. It is cylindrical in shape, 3 meters in diameter, and 10 meters high. Its conical base is particularly striking, which—like the double cornice at the top, which was added later—served to strengthen the tower against strong winds.
