The church was once the parish church of the village of Strevelingerode, which belonged to the St. Ludgeri monastery at the end of the 10th century. In 1160 it was first mentioned as a chapel. As early as 1220, the church was incorporated into the Helmstedt urban area when the city wall was built. With the introduction of the Reformation, St. Walpurgis was no longer a parish church, but used as a side church of St. Stephani in Helmstedt, so that from then on baptisms and weddings no longer took place here.
