The monument was erected in 1922 to honor the 131 Turnhout soldiers who died in the First World War.
Madelon has been showing off on Zegeplein for years. She had a hard time at times. Her spot in the entertainment district made her desirable to some overconfident revelers. Every now and then someone decided to give her a close hug. That climb didn't always end well, both for the statue and for her worshippers.
The statue has been restored. Thanks to her well-deserved revamp, Madelon is now all set for her 100th birthday in 2022.
