After the original lords of the castle died out, the castle on the Zabelstein came into the possession of the Würzburg diocese around 1300. The prince-bishops had the castle expanded considerably and the castle was soon considered impregnable. The fortress became the official seat and important documents and the episcopal treasure were housed here.
The castle was badly damaged during the Peasants' War, but was rebuilt afterwards. In 1689 there was a devastating fire and the heavily damaged castle was abandoned.
Today the remains are listed and can still give you an impression of the former facility.

Nice destination, very close to nature and a formerly important castle in our area.

There are still individual pieces of the walls of the once large castle. Be sure to walk around the outside once. The castle ruins place is very beautiful and invites you to take a break.
The climb to the castle is quite pleasant compared to other castle ruins.
