Landmark of the city of Marseille

      FR

An emblematic figure of the City of Marseille, she watches over sailors, fishermen and all Marseille residents. The “Good Mother” is visible from the four corners of the city and faces the Mediterranean Sea in all its grandeur.

Thanks to its architectural beauty and the magnificent view over the entire city, it is the most visited monument in Marseille.

In 1214, a first small chapel and a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary were built. Several chapels succeeded one another until the construction of the current basilica. Thus, La Garde Hill therefore has a triple vocation: a lookout post, a military work, a place of worship and pilgrimage.
In the middle of the 19th century, Mr. de Mazenod decided to build a large Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica there. The first stone was laid on September 11, 1853, the work was entrusted to the architect Henry Espérandieu and the consecration took place on June 5, 1864.

A beautiful basilique with a view over the whole city - it's worth fighting for.
