In order to understand why the ground has simply slumped over a large area here, we have to know that we are standing on very old layers of rock. Below us there are various layers of limestone - or some of them no longer lie there because they have simply been dissolved by the groundwater. In concrete terms, this means that a larger cavity has collapsed here a few meters below the surface and we can see the result in front of us.
