The beautiful panoramic panel was installed by the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park in 2013. It is helpful for orienting yourself while enjoying the beautiful view.

The Rotenfels is a 200 meter high and almost 1200 meter long steep face that stretches from Norheim to Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg. The Rotenfels is the most prominent part of a massif of volcanic rock - the rhyolite (formerly porphyry), which ends at the Bad Kreuznach spa park. The boulder was formed when glowing magma pushed to the earth's surface and solidified around 290 million years ago. It was only over the course of hundreds of thousands of years that the river dug its way into the rock through erosion. A deep narrow valley was created, the Nahe breakthrough, with rhyolite formations on both sides of the Nahe.

The Rotenfels plateau is partly a nature reserve. EThe dry, warm Mediterranean climate and the rocky, nitrogen-poor soil favor a special fauna and flora: Peregrine falcons build their nest on the highest steep face between the Alps and Scandinavia, which in turn the eagle owl likes to rob. The green lizard darts through cracks in the rock everywhere. This is where the rock maple thrives, where the countless small yellow flowers of the mountain alyssum, the mountain gold, bloom in April and May. As early as March, the flower stars of the pasque flower decorate the barren rock in purple. Until June you can admire the “Burning Bush” (“Dipdam”) in its delicate pink, but not touch it! It secretes essential oils that can cause skin irritation due to UV radiation. The steep face is an extremely demanding climbing area that is looked after by a section of the German Alpine Club, which maintains a residence here and also looks after the landscape. The 170 meter steep wall of the Bastei has only been climbed once so far. Hikers especially enjoy the path along the rocky ridge with fantastic views along the entire route. At the foot of the Rotenfels, vineyards are cultivated on steep slopes. A thin layer of humus has formed on the rock - this terroir gives the wine a special note.

A nice alpine adventure for climbers (note the very frequent closures!) - the Rotenfells is notoriously unstable, so some caution is required when climbing here.
