The waterway connects the Zuid-Willemsvaart and Noordervaart canals to the north with the Maas to the south. It is 17 km long and can be navigated by ships of inland waterway class Va with maximum dimensions of 137.5 × 15.5 × 3.2 meters. Opened on October 22, 1929, the canal has a depth of 2.5 to 2.65 meters and a dam target of 28.65 meters above NAP. The canal's only complex of locks is at Panheel.
