Parish Church of St. John the Baptist

A parish church in Dischingen already existed since the middle of the 14th century, but the existing building was completely rebuilt in the late 18th century. Prince Alexander Ferdinand von Thurn and Taxis had the impressive church built by his court architect. He designed the church in the style of the late Rococo and in the record time of just three years, the building was completed.

If you are interested in church architecture, a visit to the church is a must. The expansive interior decoration as well as the impressive window pictures attest to the talent of the court architect and the craftsmen of the time.

Saint John the Baptist, to whom the Dischingen church "St. Johann Baptist" is consecrated, is - like Saint Joseph - a man on the threshold from the Old to the New Testament. His parents are Zacharias and Elisabeth, after the proclamation of the Incarnation through her, the Mother of God visits her relative Elisabeth, who will give birth to a son in old age, namely John the Baptist. He is six months older than Jesus and is considered to be his forerunner. He lives in the desert, preaches the repentance of sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan, there Jesus also comes to be baptized, and he is filled with the Holy Spirit, who comes down on him from heaven.

The reference to the Thurn and Taxis princely family can be found in the form of a coat of arms above the chancel arch inside the church.
