The parish was founded in 1155, belonging to the Deutz monastery, as a branch church of St. Pankratius in Oberhausen-Osterfeld. The first chapel was a round building, followed in 1425 by a nave with a tower and choir. It was elevated to parish status in the 17th century. In the 19th century, the nave and tower were demolished and replaced by the current church. In 1950, the building was elevated to a provost church.
