The St. Jakobi Church, consecrated in 1149 by Bishop Vicelin and built in Romanesque style, marks the historical center of the village of Bornhöved. It is located on Mönchsweg and its dimensions outstrip other churches of the same construction period, and it is probably the only church whose construction and consecration can actually be traced back to Bishop Vicelin. Excavations in the 1950s uncovered the foundations of an older baptistery and mission chapel in today's choir room, probably built around the year 980. The church was built from field stones and plaster using the so-called climbing scarf technique. Conversions and additions such as the children's house (today sacristy) in the south, tower in the west, half-timbered gable and chancel with pillars characterize the current appearance of the Vicelin Church of St. Jakobi.
