Church of the early seventeenth century of Mannerist style following the model of the Roman church of II Gesú de Vignola. It is believed to be a work by Juan de Nates.
It was completely restored in the 40s of the last century because it was very affected by the great fire of Santander in 1941, in fact its west wing is completely redone since nothing remained of it.

This church is dedicated to the Blessed Mother of God, Santa Maria. The addition "de la Anunciación (Asunción)" to the patronage refers to the Feast of the Annunciation to Mary (the feast day is March 25th, exactly 9 months before Christmas), when the angel of the Lord brought her the message that she would give birth to the Son of God - Jesus Christ.
According to the report in the 1st chapter of the Gospel of Luke, this happened in Nazareth (Israel). There, at the place where this happened - according to a tradition dating back around two thousand years - there is a large church, which can therefore be considered the 'original patronage church' for the title of this church here.
