Cabo Mayor Lighthouse

Santander's lighthouse has stood on the rocky outcrop for almost 200 years and now houses an art gallery, a café, and historical monuments.
Located north of Santander, Cabo Mayor seems almost otherworldly with its rugged coastline and simple, whitewashed architecture. Visit Cabo Mayor at sunset and enjoy the art inspired by the sunlight illuminating the pale cliffs of the Catalan coast. Cabo Mayor has long served as a destination for Santander residents and has often played a major role in Santander's history. Today, it is home to several monuments that offer a glimpse into Santander's soul.Go up to the lighthouse, a faithful companion to ships in the area since the 19th century. Take time to admire the architecture of the lighthouse and the adjacent buildings where the lighthouse keeper once lived.

Head west to the site of the former Puente del Diablo, a natural bridge that has now collapsed, and then to El Pantéon del Inglés, built by a local in the late 19th century in honor of his English friend. As the sun sets and the sea glows red, return to the lighthouse and enjoy the spectacle with a drink.By car, it takes 15 minutes from central Santander to Cabo Mayor, at the southern tip of the peninsula. On foot, the lighthouse is a pleasant one-hour walk from Santander, and a bus will take you halfway there. Parking is available near the lighthouse, but may be limited during the summer months. The lighthouse galleries are open mornings and evenings Tuesday to Sunday. The on-site café operates during normal opening hours.
