The sand deposited here has a long history... approx. 250 million years... at least I don't think so... after that it was used as an ink killer and scouring sand for floorboards... From the 1960s the pit was allowed to be natural again...

Hiking

Friction sand is a geological specialty that was mined in the neighboring pit as well as in some other places in the Spessart. Rubbing sand was originally used to dry documents that had been written on with fresh ink. Up until the 1960s, rubbing sand was used to scrub floorboards and to clean heavily soiled pots (VIM, IMI, ATA). The sand pit near Kleinostheim was closed in 1942.
