The Schmalzturm, also called beautiful tower, is a building of the first city wall (early 14th century) of Landsberg am Lech. As an ornament, cloverleaf friezes run around the tower; colorful roof tiles, held in the city colors, and a storm bell tower express the importance of the gate. He received the nickname "Schmalzturm", because on sunny days, the market women with their goods, including Schmalz, put in the shade of the gate. The lard remained so firm and could be sold better.
