Mary Isabel Portman bought the Kranzbachwiese in 1913 and began building her house. In 1915 the "English Castle" was completed despite the start of the war, but Mary Portman had already left Germany. In 1931, the Protestant Church of Dortmund leased the house and ran a rest home for young people from the Ruhr area. From 1938 to 1945, the Kranzbach was a place for so-called Kinderland despatches and subsequently a rest hotel for officers of the US Army. From 1947 the Protestant church moved back in until 2003 and then sold it to the current owners, who opened "Das Kranzbach" as a wellness hotel in 2007.
