San Giovanni Battista is the main church of Acquaformosa, built in the early 16th century by the Albanians who settled in the area. It was later remodeled in the Romanesque-Baroque style, and the three-nave interior features splendid Byzantine mosaics and icons, including Christ Pantocrator in the central dome.

San Giovanni Battista is one of the most important Orthodox churches in a region shaped by the Arbëresh community. At the beginning of the 15th century Albanian refugees settled in this part of Calabria, who, in addition to their own language, also keep traditional costumes and Orthodox rites alive.
