The Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Guardia (also known as Madonna della Guardia) was built in 1859 on a project by the surveyor Luigi Viglieri. A first project involved the construction in the vicinity of the Pylon erected in 1815 in honor of the Madonna della Guardia, where around 1950 some little shepherds would have a vision of the Virgin Mary. However, some people preferred a lower location for the construction of the sanctuary, because it is flatter and also closer to the town of Calice Ligure. Initially this second proposal prevailed and work began on this site in 1858. However, a fatal accident occurred which was interpreted as a sign from the Madonna that the construction should take place higher, so the sanctuary was finally built on the ground near the Pylon.
