The tower was built in 1442. The clock in the tower has the right to strike first in Lucerne and therefore strikes one minute earlier than all other clocks in Lucerne.
The tower is freely accessible from April 1st to November 1st.

The Musegg Wall is the second, outer ring of fortifications on the north side of the city. Ten towers were originally part of the fortifications. Today nine still exist. Two towers were designed as gate towers.

In 1860 the outer Weggistor and 40m of the Musegg Wall were demolished. Today it is preserved over a length of 870 m and is a national monument under the protection of the Swiss Confederation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly is the Zytturm (Clock Tower) located?

The Zytturm, or Clock Tower, is located in Lucerne, Switzerland, not Zug. It's a prominent part of the historic Musegg Wall, which crowns Lucerne's Old Town. The address is Museggmauer Weg, 6004 Luzern, Switzerland.

Are there any specific walking routes or trails that incorporate the Zytturm?

Absolutely! The Zytturm is an integral part of the Musegg Wall walk. You can enjoy a scenic stroll along the 870-meter preserved section of the medieval wall, which connects several towers, including the Zytturm. This walk offers fantastic views of Lucerne, Lake Lucerne, and the surrounding mountains.

What is the difficulty level of exploring the Zytturm and the Musegg Wall?

Exploring the Zytturm itself involves climbing stairs to reach the top for the views and exhibition. The Musegg Wall walk is generally considered an easy to intermediate stroll, suitable for most fitness levels. It's a relatively flat path along the wall, though there are some inclines to reach the wall initially. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Is the Zytturm (Clock Tower) accessible during the winter months?

The Zytturm is freely accessible to the public from April 1st to November 1st. During the winter months, from November 2nd to March 31st, the tower itself is closed. However, you can still walk along sections of the Musegg Wall and admire the tower from the outside.

How long should I plan for a visit to the Zytturm and the Musegg Wall?

To fully explore the Zytturm, including its exhibition and enjoying the panoramic views, allow about 30-60 minutes. If you plan to walk along the entire accessible section of the Musegg Wall, which is highly recommended, you should allocate an additional 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the sights.

What are the parking options near the Zytturm (Clock Tower)?

Parking directly at the Zytturm is limited as it's located within the historic Old Town area. It's advisable to use public parking garages in Lucerne city center, such as the Kesselturm or Bahnhof P+R, and then walk or take public transport to the Musegg Wall. Parking can fill up quickly, especially during peak season.

What public transport options are available to reach the Zytturm?

The Zytturm is easily accessible by public transport. From Lucerne train station (Bahnhof Luzern), you can take a local bus to stops near the Old Town, such as 'Löwenplatz' or 'Schwanenplatz', and then enjoy a short walk up to the Musegg Wall. The walk from the city center is also very pleasant.

Is the Zytturm (Clock Tower) suitable for families with children?

Yes, the Zytturm and the Musegg Wall are generally family-friendly. Children often enjoy the adventure of walking along the old city wall and climbing the tower. The historical exhibition inside the tower can also be engaging. However, be aware that there are stairs within the tower, and supervision is always recommended.

Is the Zytturm (Clock Tower) wheelchair accessible?

Due to its historical nature and design, the Zytturm itself, with its internal stairs, is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. While parts of the Musegg Wall path might be accessible, accessing the tower's interior and upper levels would be challenging for wheelchair users.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options close to the Zytturm?

Being in Lucerne's Old Town, there are numerous cafes, restaurants, and pubs within a short walking distance from the Zytturm and the Musegg Wall. You'll find a wide range of dining options to suit all tastes. Similarly, many hotels and guesthouses are available throughout the Old Town and city center, offering convenient access to the tower and other attractions.

What makes the Zytturm particularly interesting for history buffs?

Beyond its medieval construction, history buffs will appreciate the Zytturm's ancient clockwork, dating back to 1385, and its unique 'right of the first strike'. The tower also houses an exhibition on the history of timekeeping, showcasing nine other historic clocks. Furthermore, the original user manual for the clock, authored in 1385, is considered the oldest instruction guide for a public clock in the world.

Are dogs allowed inside the Zytturm or on the Musegg Wall?

While dogs are generally welcome on a leash along the outdoor sections of the Musegg Wall, they are typically not permitted inside the Zytturm tower itself due to the confined spaces and historical exhibits. It's always a good idea to check for specific signage at the entrance.
