The Pleiße is a 90 km long, right (eastern) tributary of the Weißen Elster in Saxony and Thuringia. It rises in Lichtentanne-Ebersbrunn in the Erzgebirge basin and flows into the Leipzig water junction. The river is well developed by the Pleiße cycle path.

The name Pleiße is of old Sorbian origin and means: "the swamp-forming water". It gave its name to the Pleissenland (Plisni) on its lower reaches, which was important in the Middle Ages.
