The sequoias in the floodplain forest come from the Wilhelma Saat of King Wilhelm I of Württemberg, who gave the royal forest directorates in the country an exceptional planting order. When the giant sequoia trees were discovered in North America in the middle of the 19th century, King Wilhelm I, as a designated nature lover, took the opportunity to have seeds delivered directly from California, so that they could be grown in the cold house of today's Wilhelma in Stuttgart. At that time these giant trees were called Wellingtonie in Württemberg. The young plants were then systematically planted in exposed locations in the royal forests and in numerous palace gardens and parks in Württemberg.
