    The undisputed economic center is the capital Fort-de-France, where Caribbean, modern and colonial houses line up. Here stands a statue of Joséphine de Beauharnais, the island's most famous daughter: The parents of Napoleon Bonaparte's first wife had a sugarcane plantation.

    Unable to imagine a life without slaves, Joséphine's husband, the Emperor, reintroduced slavery under pressure in 1802, even though the French convention had decided to abolish it eight years earlier. So it took another 46 years. This explains why Joséphine's statue is missing the head: Unknown ones have beaten it off in 1991 - in a subsequent revolutionary act - after all, it's in France.
