For Nantes, Tadashi Kawamata imagined Belvédère de l’Hermitage. The structure, made of wood, opens with a narrow and long footbridge, slightly sloping and surrounded by high palisades, which offers a framed perspective on the sky and the river. This rectilinear and stable path continues, without a fence, cantilevered above the cliff. The visitor, with the sensation of a certain dizziness, advances towards the void and discovers the clear and breathtaking view of the city and the river.

Literally in the landscape, he perceives under the decking a chaotic tangle of beams clinging to the cliff which evokes the round and precarious shape of a swallow's nest.

In order to best integrate with the surrounding landscape, the artist chose two species of wood: bilinga, an exotic wood, for the supporting structure, and pre-grayed larch for the decking, the fence and the mesh of the nest .

The footbridge is 2.80 meters wide and extends 36 meters long, including 10 meters cantilevered above the cliff, almost 20 meters from the ground.

Tadashi Kawamata was born in 1953 in Hokkaido, Japan. He lives and works in Tokyo and Paris. He is represented by the Kamel Mennour gallery (Paris). Tadashi Kawamata has created site-specific works around the world. He is notably the author of L'Observatoire à Lavau-sur-Loire, a permanent work in the Estuaire Nantes <> Saint-Nazaire collection.
