If you take the shortest route from Beethovenplatz in the direction of Goethe's garden house in the Park an der Ilm and climb down the natural stone steps to the river, you have to go through a narrow rock formation called the Nadelöhr. It is artificially created.
Goethe had the "eye of the needle" repaired by the ducal court gardener Carl Heinrich Gentzsch for a rather sad reason.
