Classified as "Principal Walloon Heritage"
The medieval ruins of the castle of Herbeumont are located on a rock ridge that dominates the village and the meanders of the Semois.
The castle was founded in 1268 by Jehan de Rochefort, son of the house of Walcourt. Other families that owned the castle over time: the house of Orgeo (1268-1420), the house of de la Marck-Rochefort (1420-1544), the house of Stolberg (1544-1574) and the house of Lowestein (1574-1796). The heavily vegetated steep slopes of the hill made the castle inaccessible from three sides for a long time.
The castle was rebuilt several times. The walls were strengthened during the 15th century and were flanked on the south side by a sturdy round tower at each end. The castle was destroyed by fire by the French troops of Marshal de la Ferté on the orders of Louis XIV on August 21, 1657.
Since 1993, the archaeological site has been included in the list of the Exceptional Heritage of Wallonia.
