The bird island
The nature reserve "bird sanctuary shallow-water and island zone in Altmühlsee" has a size of over 200 ha. As the general map shows, the NSG occupies about two-fifths of the lake area.
The protected area is made up of ecologically high-quality and sensitive areas: open lake area, shallow water areas, reed beds, wet meadows and shrubbery make up the habitat for an unusually large variety of plants and animals. The strict separation of the lake into a recreational area and a relatively large, largely undisturbed nature conservation area favored the development of the artificial nature reserve into an important nesting and resting place for at least 210 different bird species each year. Among them are many threatened waterfowl and waders, which breed here in part or rely on the area as an important stepping stone on their thousands of miles long journey to winter quarters. As the succession progresses, the island zone becomes more and more interesting for the songbirds as well. Already at the edge of the trail, a large variety of plants and smaller animals such as butterflies, beetles and dragonflies can be observed.

This makes it part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas.Territory descriptionWhen the Altmühlsee was built in the 1980s, the Vogelinsel area was created with around 40 small flat inland islands, mud banks and particularly long shorelines. Different types of biotopes interlock here: shallow water zones with underwater plants, reed beds and sedges, as well as high shrub areas and shrubbery.Every year, more than 200 bird species use the biotope as a food, resting and mouse habitat. During the migration, the number of observable birds reaches its maximum. Numerous birds remain at the Altmühlsee for brood.tourismThe nature reserve is located in the Franconian Lake District tourist region. A barrier-free bird and nature trail offers pedestrians and people with reduced mobility the opportunity to enter and explore parts of the bird island in the north. A lookout tower allows views far beyond the reserve. Excursions are offered for school classes and groups, during which expert insights provide insight into the world of birds, amphibians, insects and plants.Source: Wikipedia.

The entrance leads over a long bridge to Vogelinsel. There are narrow, small, curved paths on the island. Which are sometimes flooded or mushy. There are always information boards about the flora and fauna of the region. A highlight is the lookout tower where you have a great view of the birds or the lake. There is seating in or on the tower.

It is interesting that north of the bird island there is also a protected wetland (fauna-flora-habitat), the Wiesmet, in which all meadow breeders native to Bavaria live (lapwings, curlew, black-tailed godwit). The flat area is the flood zone of the Altmühl.
