Castel Sant'Angelo has had an eventful history over the many centuries of its existence: from a mausoleum (burial place of the Roman Emperor Hadrian) to a papal fortress and refuge (I'm referring to the infamous Sacco di Roma as a keyword here) to a museum and tourist destination. The name "Castel Sant' Angelo" goes back to the statue of the Archangel Michael, who is sheathing his sword, that crowns the building.
