As part of the Oberamt Rothenfels of the Hochstift Würzburg, Hafenlohr fell to the Counts Löwenstein-Wertheim during the secularization. From 1500 both belonged to the Franconian Empire. By mediatization in 1806 it came to the Principality of Aschaffenburg, with which it fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1814. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818.
