Hans Poulsen Egede was a Norwegian pastor of Danish descent.

He is also known as the "Apostle of the Greenlanders".

Egede became the "national saint" of Greenland.

A very interesting classification for the classification of Hans Egede from today's perspective can be found at:

The Norwegian-Danish missionary Hans Egede arrived in Greenland 300 years ago. He should play a crucial role in the development of the country. But his work is no longer seen exclusively as positive in Greenland. And that's why Nuuk has decided not to celebrate the anniversary with a communal celebration. KNR reported on this.

Last summer there was already a heated discussion about the visually distinctive Hans Egede statue in Nuuk. The mayor of Nuuk, Charlotte Ludvigsen, had the citizens vote on it at the time. At the time, the majority had spoken out in favor of leaving the statue standing. However, the debate about the colonial era did not just start last summer. And Ludvigsen told KNR that the municipality had already decided in 2019 not to spend any money on a Hans Egede anniversary. The originally planned DKK 2.7 million (around EUR 360,000) will instead be spent on improvements in Nuuk. The capital Nuuk (Danish Godthåb) will have its 300th birthday in 2028. This is a time to celebrate the development. Ludvigsen said that if others felt the need to celebrate the arrival of Egede, for example a church or a museum, they would be happy to do so.

Earlier Egede anniversaries were celebrated even bigger. The Danish royal family came to Greenland for the 200th and for the 250th there was a new church in Nuuk. But the mood has partly changed. As you saw in the vote on the statue, there are still many who hold on to Egede and want his role in Greenlandic history to be recognized. Others are more critical. A new association, Nalik Kalaallit Nunaat, now wants to actively promote discussions about the colonial era and find new solutions for the future.
