The church dates from the 13th century and was built in the Romanesque style. It was later redesigned in the Baroque style in the 18th century, with the Romanesque style remaining dominant.

The late Romanesque church of Weidenhain is a three-aisled pillar basilica built between 1200 and 1250. The structure, made of plastered fieldstone masonry, has undergone little change over the years, allowing the study of the typical architectural style of the period in an authentic sacred building. The large-scale fresco in the apse from the 13th century is noteworthy. It depicts Christ in the mandorla surrounded by the twelve apostles.
