Coal mining on the Ebberg near Dortmund has a long history. An old tunnel was reactivated there by the Louisenglück union as early as 1778. In 1783, the mining company Gewerkschaft Glücksfortgang opened up the Sengsbank seam and mining continued eastwards towards Kückshausen1. However, mining was stopped in 1823 because it was deemed unworthy of construction.

The Ebberg is now a nature reserve and is home to the Nature Friends House, which was built in 1928. The area was established around a former quarry in which Ruhr sandstone was mined for railway construction1. Since 1979, the area has been an amphibian habitat and was expanded in 1998 to include an oak-hornbeam forest and a mixed forest area.
