The history of porcelain production begins in 1952 in the Frisian Varel district of Rahling. The Melitta group is looking for a new production facility to manufacture its porcelain filters. In the course of the following years, production was continuously expanded and, in addition to Melitta filters, also included coffee and dining services as well as molds for the kitchen made of porcelain, ceracron and stoneware. -
In the first half of the 1960s, over 1200 people worked in Rahling, two thirds of whom were women. At that time it was popularly known as "... I work at Melitta or" Auf Rahling ". In the 1970s the" economic boom "slowly came to an end and the Melitta group of companies released the porcelain factory into independence Friesland Bentz & KG ", later as" Friesland Porzellan ".
By the mid-1990s, Melitta completely parted with its company shares. In 1991 the company only had around 300 employees. The company went into bankruptcy twice by 2005. At this point in time only 85 employees are still working in Rahling. As a result, the company was even due to close in 2019. -
But the closure could be averted.
At the beginning of 2019 it was announced that the porcelain factory in Rahling was merging with the Dutch company "Royal Goedewaagen" based in Friesland, the Netherlands. The remaining 50 or so jobs in Rahling were saved and the plant is now one of four locations of the Dutch-German group of companies.
The company's factory outlet is very popular with locals and tourists.
