After the expulsion of the Turks at the end of the 17th century, with the arrival of the Jesuit order of the Catholic Church in the military garrison in Petrovaradin, preparations began for the re-spread of Christianity in this area. The construction of the church lasted from 1701 to 1714, when it was consecrated on May 20, 1714.

The church was built on the model of the main church of the Jesuit order IL IESU, which is located in Rome. The former milky-white facade of the church was damaged especially in the period 1941-1961. when the railway passed through Strossmayer Street and soot was constantly falling on the church and other facades in the area. Inside the church there is an altar dominated by the image of St. George, the patron saint of knights and soldiers.
