The Castello del Mercato San Severino is the second largest Italian castle by extension, and was founded after 1067 by a Norman knight, Turgisio Sanseverino after Duke Roberto il Guiscardo gave him Rota (the ancient name of the city) as a fief. It was first owned by the Sanseverinos, only to be abandoned due to the participation of one of the members of the family in the conspiracy of the Barons against Ferrante after the latter confiscated the castle from the owners, returning it only after years, when it lost almost all its military connotations.
