They are the second largest Apennine plateau after that of Campo Imperatore, it forms the bottom of an ancient Apennine lake, now dried up. In the southernmost part of Pian Grande there is the "Mergani ditch": what apparently appears to be a stream fed by a source is, in reality, a veined-shaped doline that ends in a sinkhole where the rainwater captured by the Mergani ditch ends. It is famous for the Fiorita, that is the flowering phenomenon that colors the plain between the end of May and the beginning of July. [Wikipedia]
